Comments: Headquartered in Shawnee, KS, Nazdar is a leader in the screen and inkjet ink segments, and had a strong year in 2019.

Nazdar made several significant personnel moves this year. In particular, the company named Woodrow Williams III as VP of global manufacturing in June 2019. Williams most recently was director of operations overseeing nine regional service centers for a major industry ink manufacturer.

“We are excited to have Woodrow join Nazdar and look forward to the positive contributions he will make in our organization,” Nazdar Ink Technologies president Richard Bowles said.

In addition, Nazdar added Martin Burns as business development manager for OEM inks; Burns was previously with Nazdar for 16 years. Dean Allen was brought on as OEM business development manager for EMEA and North America.

Nazdar is highly regarded for its R&D, and the company launched a variety of new screen and inkjet inks during the past year. Nazdar’s new 204 Series wide format solvent ink, its newest offering, is an alternative for Roland TrueVIS SG and VG Series printers using TrueVIS TR inks.

The 204 Series provides prints that equal or surpass the quality and reliability of OEM inks but at a lower price point, according to the company. The 204 Series is available in CMYK plus Light Cyan, Light Magenta and Light Black.

Comments: Headquartered in Shawnee, KS, Nazdar maintains a leading position in the screenprinting and inkjet ink fields. James MacDonald, VP of global sales and marketing for Nazdar, reported that Nazdar had an excellent year in 2018, particularly in North America, and continues to grow in both of its core markets.

“Nazdar fared very well in the domestic North American market and enjoyed growth in the key market segments we operate in,” MacDonald reported. “Nazdar continued to maintain sales in Screen Graphics, which is a market that is in general decline, while 2018 was also a good year for Nazdar entering into new industrial markets and the expansion of our OEM business.”

Nazdar places great emphasis on R&D, and in addition to several new plug and play inks, the company launched new industrial inkjet inks, including its NWIJ single-pass inkjet inks and Nazdar D2S inkjet inks for containers, as well as UV LED inkjet, screen and narrow web inks.

“Industrial Inkjet and our OEM business will be the key areas of growth,” MacDonald noted. “Nazdar continue to invest in research and development to bring innovative products to market to support our key initiatives and long term strategy.”

MacDonald said that Nazdar is navigating challenges from a number of global issues, including raw materials, transportation costs, tariffs and Brexit. Nazdar is well prepared for these challenges and anticipates further growth in the coming year.

“We have experienced escalating transport cost, some of which are a direct result of raw material shortages requiring the need to airfreight regular smaller quantities rather than more economical larger sea freight consignments,” he said. “China is an important export market for Nazdar, and the recent increase in duties have had a slight impact in the latter half of the year. One area of uncertainty is our trade with Europe out of our UK facility, which is difficult to predict until a final Brexit agreement has been reached.

“Even with the above raw material shortages, regulatory changes and general economic factors mentioned above, Nazdar is very confident of continued success and growth in all the markets we operate in for 2019 and beyond,” MacDonald added.

Comments: Nazdar, a specialist in screenprinting, inkjet and flexo inks, consists of Nazdar Ink Technologies, Nazdar SourceOne and Nazdar Consulting. The company had a solid year in 2017, launching new products and continuing to grow in its markets.

In major news, Mike Fox, the company’s longtime president as well as CEO, retired at the end of 2017. Fox had been president of Nazdar since 1991, leading the company through its expansion, acquisitions and its successful move into digital printing. Richard Bowles, who has served as president of Nazdar Ink Technologies since 2013, has succeeded Fox as president of Nazdar.

“I wish to thank Mike for his many contributions to Nazdar and Thrall Enterprises,” Jeff Thrall, CEO of Thrall Enterprises, parent company of Nazdar, said.

In another personnel move, Stephen Woodall was named global market segment manager for aqueous and solvent digital inks.

“The wide format signage and graphics market is a strong focus for Nazdar and we expect to see sustained growth for years to come, with a steady increase in the installed base of machine across all regions,” Woodall said. “Nazdar offers a wide range of plug-and-play inks for this sector, all color-matched to specific OEM inks and at equivalent quality, but at a lower cost.”

Comments: The screenprinting industry has transitioned toward digital printing technologies. Nazdar, a longtime leader in the North American screenprinting ink business, has made that transition as well, developing a strong presence in the inkjet ink market, as well as in the growing flexo and digital narrow web ink segments.

James MacDonald, Nazdar’s VP, global marketing, said that the company enjoyed excellent growth in key markets, including UV/LED screen and digital inks, industrial screenprinting inks and digital OEM services.

“Nazdar enjoyed modest growth in 2016, largely due to expansion in international markets,” MacDonald said. “Nazdar is one of the market leaders in UV LED technology, where we are now starting to see significant opportunities for growth in 2017.”

MacDonald added that 2017 started off very well for Nazdar. “We look forward to continuing growth in these markets,” MacDonald said.

Nazdar prides itself on its R&D, and the past year saw the company launch a wide variety of inks. With an eye on the growing UV digital printing market, Nazdar developed its 702 and 703 Plug and Play series of UV inkjet inks. The 702 Series is formulated for Océ Arizona printers running IJC256 inks; the 703 Series is designed for Fujifilm Acuity printers using KI Series inks. The 705 Series was developed for HP FB500/700 printers.

Comments: A longtime leader in the North American screenprinting ink industry, Nazdar has developed a strong presence in the inkjet ink field as the screenprinting industry has transitioned toward digital printing technologies.

Richard Bowles, Nazdar’s president, said that the company enjoyed strong growth in a number of key markets, including UV/LED screen and digital inks, industrial screen printing inks and digital OEM services

“Nazdar experienced significant growth in 2015, largely due to expansion in international markets,” Bowles said. “UV LED is seeing significant growth, and Nazdar already has several years experience producing these inks.”

Printers and brand owners alike are constantly facing more regulations. Bowles said that Nazdar’s extensive experience and knowledge in this area is helping its customers navigate these challenges.

“Nazdar has extensive regulatory assistance capabilities, and we are well versed in both USA domestic and international concerns,” he added.

Currency fluctuations are another concern facing global ink companies. “As an international manufacturing company, the recent exchange rate fluctuations have presented a significant challenge,” Bowles noted.

All in all, Bowles anticipates a good year ahead for Nazdar. “2016 has started off well for Nazdar; we typically see increased demand in US political years,” Bowles concluded.

Comments: Nazdar is a longtime leader in the North American screenprinting ink industry, and as the screenprinting industry has moved toward digital printing technologies, Nazdar has also built a strong presence in the inkjet ink field.

The label and narrow web market is one segment where Nazdar is making headway, expanding in the beauty brand, food and beverage markets. In particular, Nazdar’s shrink sleeve ink has enjoyed sales growth. Nazdar launched its 6800 Series UV LED flexo ink for narrow web in April 2014.

Digital inks have been an emphasis for Nazdar during the past nine years, ever since the company acquired Lyson Ltd. in 2006. Nazdar’s R&D team has continuously formulated new inkjet inks, and the past year has been no exception.

At FESPA 2014 in April, the company highlighted its new 202 Series Inks, which are designed for Roland XF, XR, and VSi printers. The company also showed its UV digital inks for POP displays, durable graphics and banners, as well as its water-based TX650 Series Dye Sublimation Inks for some Mimaki, Mutoh and Roland printers. TX650 inks are designed for sportswear, apparel, interior design and displays.

In February 2015, Nazdar announced the introduction of three new inkjet inks at Sign & Digital UK 2015: the 153 Series inks for Mimaki printers; and Nazdar 720 Series of low-odor inks; and the Nazdar 260 Series, which the company said is compatible with the Roland EcoUV ink set.

Comments: A longtime leader in the North American screen printing ink industry, Nazdar has evolved with its customers, developing a major presence in the inkjet ink field over the past eight years. As a result, the company continues to enjoy growth in these fields, with the company enjoying increasing sales throughout its portfolio in 2013.

“Nazdar had an excellent 2013, with growth in most market segments it serves,” said Jay Tharp, marketing communications director for Nazdar. “Nazdar saw good growth in most ink segments, and especially in the digital inkjet arena. Nazdar continued to expand its global presence through increased distribution and expansion of international representatives.

“Due to worldwide marketing and international distribution placement, Nazdar’s sales growth in the digital inkjet markets continued to be substantial,” Tharp added. “While the specialty graphic screen printing market is reportedly dwindling, Nazdar saw strong returns, especially in the industrial segments.”

Nazdar had numerous highlights during the past 12 months, beginning with promoting Richard Bowles to president of Nazdar Ink Technologies in April 2013. Bowles joined Nazdar in 2002 as vice president of marketing, and since 2005 has served as vice president and general manager of Nazdar Ink Technologies.

In other personnel moves, Phil McGugan was promoted to vice president, sales and technical support for Nazdar Ink Technologies, which will allow the company to more closely align its Americas-based sales, technical service and Nazdar Consulting Services teams. James MacDonald was promoted to vice president of marketing for Nazdar Ink Technologies, with the goal of expanding Nazdar’s presence internationally. MacDonald had led the Nazdar, Ltd. marketing team for digital product lines.

Raw material prices continue to be volatile, but Nazdar has taken steps to control costs for its customers.

“Although the raw material pricing from some suppliers have been a rollercoaster ride in 2013, Nazdar, as always has focused on continual improvements to its production and products that enable it to maintain a modest cost increase to their customers,” Tharp said.

Coming off of an excellent year in 2013, Nazdar is looking forward to further growth in 2014.

“Our outlook for 2014 is stellar,” Tharp concluded. “With our continued focus on worldwide growth, internal product and processes optimization, and customer satisfaction, we are confident in the results of 2014.”

Comments: For the most part, the screen printing industry was the first major segment that saw the potential for digital printing. Leading screen ink manufacturers saw the opportunities as well, and became leaders in the growing inkjet ink field.

Nazdar, a longtime leader in the North American screen printing ink market, has embraced digital ink technologies, and has grown along with its customers. Its business areas include Nazdar Ink Technologies, a leading global manufacturer of specialty inks serving inkjet, narrow web and screen printing markets; Nazdar SourceOne, a leading distributor of inks, equipment and supplies for screen and digital printers in North and Central America; and Nazdar Consulting Services, which helps printers optimize results through training and consultation.

In 2012, the company enjoyed further growth in both printing segments, particularly in the area of UV curing.

“Nazdar saw growth in the digital/inkjet and narrow web ink markets, and continues to see an increasing share of the global screen ink market,” said Phil McGugan, Nazdar’s vice president of global sales and marketing. “Nazdar is focusing on growing our UV inkjet and wide format inkjet business. We are also expanding our product offerings in both screen and inkjet LED curable inks.”

UV LED is an area of great interest for printers, and Nazdar has released several LED curable UV inks, both screen and inkjet, into the global market.

“We are seeing inkjet printer manufacturers embrace LED curing in wide format and grand format,” Mr. McGugan added.

Mr. McGugan noted that raw material costs continue to be volatile, “but we continue to work to reduce costs and minimize their impact on products.”

Overall, Mr. McGugan anticipates growth for Nazdar in 2013.

“Nazdar continues to expand globally and increase market share. As the economy slowly improves, we expect our growth to follow suit,” Mr. McGugan concluded.

Comments: Long a leader in the North American screen printing ink market, Nazdar has grown along with its customers, successfully moving into the digital printing ink field and expanding its global reach.

Because of these efforts, Nazdar is enjoying growth worldwide in all of its business areas, which include Nazdar Ink Technologies, a leading manufacturer of specialty inks serving inkjet, narrow web and screen printing markets worldwide; Nazdar SourceOne, a leading distributor of inks, equipment and supplies for screen and digital printers in North and Central America; and Nazdar Consulting Services, with industry renowned personnel that help printers optimize results through training and consultation.

“For us, 2011 was a success with growth in all product sectors,” said Richard Bowles, Nazdar’s vice president and general manager. “Nazdar continues to expand our business in Europe, South America and Asia Pacific.”

Mr. Bowles noted that Nazdar is enjoying growth in a number of areas, notably in digital ink, flexo/rotary ink and LED technology, where the company has accomplished ground-breaking work on the screen side.

“Nazdar collaborated to make Empire Screen Printing in Onalaska, WI, the first company to successfully utilize UV LED ink curing technology for screen printing,” Mr. Bowles said. “LED curing offers many benefits, including elimination of ozone emissions and CFMs from mercury bulbs, lower operating costs for bulb and reflector replacement, and energy savings.”

On the digital ink side, Nazdar has expanded its technical service, creating the InkAnswers@nazdar.com connection for quick assistance.

Mr. Bowles pointed out that the impact of digital technologies is felt throughout the printing industry, including the prepress field.

“Clearly, digital technology impinges on the screen printing market, though sectors, particularly industrial, remain healthy,” Mr. Bowles said. “Prepress technology has become an important tool in all printing methods, shortening set-up time and providing more accurate color.”

Mr. Bowles noted that raw materials remain an area of concern for Nazdar.

“Raw material pricing and supply continue to be a concern,” he said. “Nazdar is continually working to leverage our position in order to keep costs low.”

For Nazdar, 2012 is a year of great promise as well as celebration, as the company reflects on its 90th anniversary.

“This year Nazdar, one of the earliest manufacturers of screen printing ink, celebrates 90 years in business,” Mr. Bowles said. “We expect to continue current growth trends, both geographically and technologically.”

Comments: Coming off of the global recession that impacted the printing industry in so many ways, 2010 brought better news to the printing and ink industries. Such is the case with Nazdar, which saw growth in its core markets of screen printing and digital while also making inroads in narrow web.

“For Nazdar, 2010 was a significant improvement over 2009, in which we enjoyed growth in all product sectors and all geographies,” said Phil McGugan, Nazdar’s vice president, global sales and marketing. “Part of our growth into 2010 was no doubt due to economic recovery, but in addition to this, there was extensive market share growth.

“Our growth has been on product front and geographical sector,” Mr. McGugan added. “Our digital market growth was a large part of our success in 2010 and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. We also saw healthy growth in our narrow web program and sales to the industrial screen market were buoyant. We also experienced significant growth in all our international markets.”

The digital and narrow web markets were particular highlights, according to Mr. McGugan, as were the gains made outside of North America. He noted that Nazdar continued its rapid growth in the digital ink market, both solvent and UV, wide and grand format. He added that Nazdar’s expansion in Europe, Asia and South America continued at a fast pace, as did the company’s growth in the narrow web market.

Mr. McGugan noted that Nazdar was able to navigate its way through the raw material price increases that are impacting the ink industry.

“We, like most others, experienced some raw material supply issues during the year,” Mr. McGugan reported. “However, we managed our way through these issues and continue to both monitor and search for alternative raw materials.”

Mr. McGugan said he expects to see a continuation of the success seen by Nazdar in 2010.

“We have strengthened our market presence in Europe, South America and Asia Pacific with personnel domiciled in each region,” Mr. McGugan said. “We continue to expand our digital ink and narrow web offerings, and still see great opportunities for sales expansion in the screen print market.”
