Major Products: Water-based, pigmented and dye-based and sublimation inkjet inks for textile, wide format and industrial applications, including packaging and edible inks; water-based pigmented and dye-based inkjet inks for desktop printers.
Operating Facilities: St. Louis, MO; Morges, Switzerland.
Comments: A global leader in businesses ranging from flavors, fragrances and colors for foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors, Sensient Technologies has a presence in many key markets, including inkjet inks. Sensient Technologies sales remained stable at $1.4 billion in 2019.
Sensient Imaging Technologies has a major presence in digital inks, including OEM printers and industrial and textile inks. Ink World estimates Sensient Imaging’s worldwide sales of inks at $70 million.
Simon Daplyn, marketing manager for Sensient Imaging Technologies, observed that 2019 was a challenging marketplace for digital textiles globally but, despite this, Sensient saw stable volumes and an indication of strong growth in the first months of 2020.
“There was also an increase in sales for our specialty inks, particularly with both functional UV-curable inks and edible, food-grade ink for food decoration and customization,” Daplyn added.
In addition to textiles, Daplyn said that Sensient expects to see significant growth in the packaging market.
“Early adoption of inkjet in the industry has been mainly in printing on corrugated board, but there is huge potential in both flexible and folding cartons for food packaging,” he pointed out. “The challenges here lie in formulating ink that meets the strict regulatory demands of the market, while also responding to the push for water-based technologies. At Sensient, we have projects in progress based on our SensiJet SX technology for this purpose, a water-based ink platform that is compliant in highly regulated industries for primary food contact.”
Sustainability is a key trend, and Sensient has been active in that field. Daplyn said that highlights for Sensient over 2019 have included the increased awareness of sustainability in the printing industry as a whole, and the growing trend for personalization in new, growing markets such as food.
“As a response to the growing requirement for environmentally responsible inkjet, Sensient launched ElvaJet Coral in 2019 – a novel technology for printing polyester fabrics without the need for transfer paper or the water-intensive post-process of steaming and washing,” Daplyn reported.
The ink industry is facing numerous challenges, including regulatory mandates, and Daplyn noted that Sensient is moving forward to meet these needs.
“Sensient has an in-depth understanding of the chemistry of color, strong, world-renowned heritage and experience in highly regulated markets – which all stands us in good stead when addressing the specific needs and changing requirements of our customers,” he continued. “As we advance towards the concept of a circular economy, we must keep pace with what these changes mean for ink. Many applications are driving growth in water-based ink technology due to its sustainable credentials.
Water can be a challenge to dry at the speeds required in some markets, but by adapting specific chemistries and working closely with our partners to understand and adapt to their needs, we are overcoming this. The key with almost all challenges we face is collaboration and partnership with our industry peers in hardware, software, substrate and chemistry.”
Sensient Imaging Technologies is looking forward to the coming year.
“We are very positive about the outlook for 2020,” Daplyn concluded. “The interest in digital printing is stronger than ever before, and there are markets emerging that will benefit greatly from the technology. We also expect to see further interest in our sustainable ink products, as well as new collaborations and partnerships to develop the innovative ink solutions of the future.”
Major Products: Water-based pigmented and dye-based inkjet inks for desktop printers; water-based, pigmented and dye-based and sublimation inkjet inks for wide format, textile and industrial applications.
Comments: Sensient Technologies is a global leader in numerous segments, including flavors, fragrances and colors for foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors.
Overall, Sensient’s sales remained steady at $1.4 billion in 2018. The company’s operating income rose to $203.4 million from $167.8 million in 2017.
Through Sensient Imaging Technologies, the company has a major position in digital inks, including OEM printers and industrial and textile markets. The company features its Xennia and ElvaJet ink lines. Ink World estimates its global sales of inks at $70 million.
Sensient’s inkjet inks are part of the Color Group, which reported sales of $553.5 million, an increase of approximately 5% from $526.4 million in 2017. Segment operating income increased approximately 1% to $114.9 million.
“We remain confident in our long-term strategy and we are working on a number of exciting projects. I am optimistic for 2019 and beyond,” said Paul Manning, chairman, president and CEO of Sensient Technologies.
Comments: With $1.4 billion in sales in 2017, Sensient Technologies is a global leader in numerous markets, including flavors, fragrances and colors for foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors.
The company also has a significant position in inkjet inks. Sensient Imaging Technologies is well positioned in the industrial inkjet ink field with its Xennia and ElvaJet ink lines. Ink World estimates its global sales of inks at $65 million, covering OEM printers and industrial and textile markets.
Sensient’s overall sales remained flat at $1.4 billion in 2017. Operating income declined slightly to $167.8 million in 2017, from $185.6 million for 2016.
The company’s inkjet inks are part of the Color Group, which had revenue of $526.4 million, an increase of 4.4% from $504.1 million in 2016. The Color Group’s operating income was $113.4 million in 2017, up 7.2% compared to $105.8 million in 2016.
“The company delivered adjusted earnings per share growth of 6.5%, and the Color Group had a strong year,” said Paul Manning, chairman, president and CEO of Sensient Technologies. “With our restructuring now complete, I am confident Sensient will deliver strong results in 2018, and I remain very optimistic about the company’s future.”
Comments: A worldwide leader in inkjet and colorant technology, Sensient Technologies is also a leader in flavors, fragrances and colors for foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors.
In 2016, Sensient’s sales remained strong at $1.4 billion. The company had a strong year in 2015, with sales remaining steady at $1.4 billion. Operating income from continuing operations was $185.6 million compared to $166.3 million in 2015. Cash provided by operating activities was $222.5 million in 2016, compared to $128 million in 2015.
Sensient’s inkjet ink division is a key part of the Color Group. For 2016, the Color Group recorded sales of $502.1 million, an increase of 5% from 2015. Operating income was $104.8 million in 2016, an increase of 8.5% compared to 2015, as well as an operating margin was 20.9%. The company cited good performances from Cosmetics and Food Colors businesses, adding that the Inks business enjoyed solid growth.
“I am very pleased with the company’s performance in 2016,” said Paul Manning, chairman, president and CEO of Sensient Technologies Corporation. “The Color Group had an outstanding year delivering solid profit and revenue growth, led by strong performances from the Cosmetics and Food Colors businesses.”
Sensient Imaging Technologies is strong in the industrial inkjet ink field, notably with its Xennia and ElvaJet ink portfolios in the high production textile market. Dr. Christophe Bulliard, marketing director, Sensient Imaging Technologies SA, noted that the company did particularly well in the digital textile ink segment.
“Sensient did fare quite well in 2016, developing its position as major supplier of inkjet technologies for textile printing (reactive, sublimation, polyamide, pigment) while pursuing the development of solutions for alternative industrial areas,” Dr. Bulliard noted.
The 2016 acquisition of Xennia Ltd. added a wide range of inks to Sensient’s textile range, which is ideal for the growing market.
“Sensient is clearly positioning ourselves as a contributor to new technologies and developer of printing solutions, even more so after the acquisition of Xennia Ltd. in 2015, “ said Dr. Bulliard. “We have knowledge over the full printing process which allows us to focus the development of the inks into solutions that will create value for the customer.”
Sensient Imaging Technologies is always active in R&D, with Sensijet SX the latest offering. Sensijet SX is a novel technology for water-based pigmented inks with possible application in a large number of industries.
“One of the big challenges is to get a clear picture of the value of digital printing vs. traditional printing when deciding upon investment,” Dr. Bulliard observed. “Digital is enabling some business models which are not achievable economically with flexo, gravure or offset. In this sense it shall not be seen as a different way of doing the same, but as an enabler to new business models (more personalization, less inventory, etc.)”
Comments: Sensient Technologies is a global leader in inkjet and colorant technology, as well as a leading manufacturer of flavors, fragrances and colors for foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors.
Sensient Technologies had a strong year in 2014, with sales remaining steady at $1.4 billion. Foreign currency translation decreased revenue 7.4%. Adjusted operating income was $210.0 million in 2015, slightly down from $221.2 million in 2014, again impacted by foreign currency translation.
The Flavors & Fragrances Group reported revenue of $819 million in 2015, down 3.8% from $851.5 million in 2014. Operating income increased approximately 1% to $121.9 million in 2015. Foreign currency translation reduced both revenue and operating income in 2015, by 6.7% and 2.9%, respectively.
The Color Group, which includes Sensient’s inkjet operations, reported revenue of $470.9 million, a decrease of 7.5% compared to $509.3 million in 2014. Operating income was $94.8 million in 2015, a decline of 16.9% compared to $114 million in 2014. Sensient noted that foreign currency translation had a significant impact on both revenue and operating income, reducing both by approximately 9% for the year.
“It was a very good year for Sensient,” said Paul Manning, the company’s president and CEO. “We are on schedule to complete our restructuring activities by the end of this year, and we expect the Inks business to make a significant recovery in 2016. It was a successful year for Sensient and our shareholders, and I am very optimistic about the future.”
In an important personnel move, Sensient Technologies announced that Paul Manning will add chairman to his duties, effective April 21, 2016. He will succeed Kenneth Manning, who has served as Sensient’s chairman since 1997 and will retire from the Board of Directors in April.
Under Kenneth Manning’s leadership, Sensient transformed from a commodity producer of food products into a technology-based developer and producer of advanced food and beverage colors and flavors, inkjet inks, pharmaceutical excipients and cosmetic ingredients. Sensient’s value has grown 240% during his tenure.
Sensient Technologies is a major player in the field of inkjet, particularly in digital industrial printing applications, and the ElvaJet sublimation ink portfolio is successful in the textile market. Dr. Christophe Bulliard, marketing director, Sensient Imaging Technologies SA, reported that the company’s inkjet operations had another strong year in 2015.
“Sensient did really well in 2015 with a good progression in North America and worldwide, this despite a tough environment in key textile markets,” said Dr. Bulliard. “We have launched new ranges of high performance sublimation inks and one of the first series of pigmented inks for cotton with excellent rub fastness.”
In an important move, Sensient acquired the assets of Xennia Technology Ltd., a UK manufacturer of digital inks. Xennia reported revenue of nearly $11 million in 2014. Xennia’s reactive, acid and sublimation inks are used for printing on textiles and other substrates.
“We have acquired Xennia Ltd., a key contributor to the development of digital printing solutions,” said Dr. Bulliard. “Through this acquisition, we have become one of the very few players to offer very high performance digital textile printing technologies for all fibers. We have also gained a deep knowledge in many other areas which will accelerate the development of many a project in industrial digital printing.”
There is clearly an evolution occurring in the printing industry, with inkjet among the areas making significant gains in markets such as textiles. Sensient Imaging Technologies is capitalizing on its strengths to make gains in these fields.
“Textile printing has found new businesses such as fast fashion, who benefit fully from the advantages of digital printing and the possibility to produce just what will be sold,” Dr. Bulliard noted. “This contributes both to reducing the waste and, above all, improving cash flow by avoiding large inventories of obsolete items. Having said that, the penetration of digital technology is today around 3% of total textile printing, which allows for large growth. Reactive and pigment are expected to fuel the growth. Besides textile, digital makes more and more inroads into decoration and packaging printing.”
Because Sensient is heavily involved in the food and beverage field, the company is well prepared when it comes to regulatory issues.
“Sensient is making the core of its business with regulated industries such as food, beverages or pharmaceuticals,” Dr. Bulliard noted. “We have a network of regulatory specialists who can certify daily that our products comply with industry, company or country specific regulations. They also help selecting the appropriate raw materials and manufacturing processes.”
Raw materials continue to be a concern for ink manufacturers. “The sourcing of good quality raw materials at reasonable price is always a challenge…for all of us,” he added.
Overall, Dr. Bulliard said that Sensient is looking forward to more growth in the coming years.
“We are very optimistic about 2016 and beyond: we expect further penetration of digital printing into our core areas of activity, beyond this we have a number of exciting projects which shall fuel or growth beyond 2016,” Dr. Bulliard concluded.
Comments: A global leader in inkjet and colorant technology, Sensient Technologies is also is a leading manufacturer of flavors, fragrances and colors for foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors.
Sensient Technologies had a solid year in 2014, with sales remaining steady at $1.45 billion. Adjusted operating income was $221.2 million in 2014, an increase of 7.6% over the adjusted operating income of $205.5 million in 2013.
“It was a successful year for Sensient,” said Paul Manning, president and CEO of Sensient Technologies. “The Color and Asia Pacific Groups delivered strong performances, and the Flavors & Fragrances Group continues to make progress on its strategic initiatives.”
Sensient’s largest division is Flavors & Fragrances Group, which reported revenue of $847 million in 2014, down 3% from 2013, while operating income was comparable.
The Color Group, which includes Sensient’s inkjet inks operations, had revenue of $508.1 million in 2014, up 2.6% from 2013. The company reported that operating income increased 6.5% to $114.9 million, compared to $107.9 million for 2013. These gains were attributed to strong performances from digital inks and North American food and beverage color businesses.
Sensient’s inkjet ink sales are growing, as the company pursues its development as a major actor and innovator in digital industrial printing applications. Its ElvaJet sublimation inks have done particularly well in the textile market.
Dr. Christophe Bulliard, marketing director for Sensient Imaging Technologies SA, said that Sensient Imaging Technologies had another excellent year in North America, with the company’s share of the sublimation ink segment rising faster than the market.
“We are a technology leader in the field of sublimation printing and have been growing nicely in this segment during 2014,” Dr. Bulliard observed. “In 2014, we have launched water-based pigmented inks for cotton printing, offering high color density and excellent rub and wash fastness. These inks complement our position in sustainable printing technologies, as the application of pigmented inks onto textile does not require any washing step.”
Dr. Bulliard noted that this past year, Sensient has continued to fuel the growth of “industrial digital printers” such as those sold by Reggiani, MS Italy (part of Dover) and others, which are used more and more in the sublimation printing.
“We continue to grow our shares by concentrating on high performance and productivity,” he added.
According to Dr. Bulliard, the evolution of the printing industry is diverse.
“The desktop industry is stable as less pages are printed,” he added. “We see positive movements in the digitalization of industrial printing, which is creating new markets and business models. We are less involved in commercial printing.”
Sensient’s products are found in many markets, including food and cosmetics, and the company is well versed on regulatory matters.
“More than regulatory pressure, we see a high degree of responsibility taken by brand owners, resulting in an increased number of industry or customer specific regulations (list of banned or restricted substances). As a producer of regulated chemicals, Sensient shares this responsibility and ensures that composition of our inks corresponds to the expectations.”
As for raw materials, Dr. Bulliard pointed out sourcing is still a concern, in particular for some specialty dyes typically used in the inkjet industry.
Overall, Dr. Bulliard sees new opportunities ahead for inkjet printing.
“We expect new digital printing technologies to be used in industrial applications and have a number of projects running in this perspective,” Dr. Bulliard concluded.
Major Products: Water-based pigmented and dye-based inkjet inks for desktop printers; water-based, solvent-based, oil-based and dye-based inkjet inks for wide format, textile and industrial applications.
Operating Facilities: St. Louis, MO, Tijuana, Mexico; Badalona, Spain; Norfolk, UK, Morges, Switzerland; Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany.
Comments: Sensient Technologies is a global leader in inkjet and colorant technology. The company also is a leading supplier of flavors, fragrances and colors for a wide variety of foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors.
Sensient Technologies had a solid year in 2013, as the company’s sales remained stable at $1.5 billion. Gross margin was on the rise, improving 70 basis points in 2013 to 32.4%. Operating income was $172.4 million in 2013, including $31.7 million of restructuring costs.
Christophe Bulliard, commercial director for North America at Sensient, said that 2013 was a very strong year for Sensient as it was for the whole sublimation industry.
“We have seen growth as has the whole industry. Our customers’ base has been growing and is forecast to grow further,” Bulliard noted.
Bulliard noted that large OEMs are now interested in the sublimation field, which is leading to changes.
“Large OEMs (Epson, Mimaki) have now made this application a part of their focus, demonstrating that this application is not considered as a niche any more,” he noted. “As a result, they have launched new machines which are closed, and are offering their own inks. There are also more and more printer solutions offered to their market, in particular those based on Kyocera printheads, which are marking a further step in the productivity of the industry. Sensient has been one of the pioneers also on these printers and offers very high performance products, and our sublimation inks for Kyocera heads clearly showed the strongest growth. Many new entrants are seen, often with low price offers.”
In an important move, Paul Manning became Sensient’s president and CEO, effective Feb. 2, 2014. Paul Manning was previously Sensient’s president and COO., and succeeded Kenneth P. Manning, who will serve as Sensient’s non-employee chairman of the board and advisor until Dec. 31, 2015, in order to ensure a successful transition. Kenneth Manning served as Sensient’s CEO since 1996, transforming the company from a commodity producer of food products into a global leader in advanced food and beverage colors and flavors, inkjet inks, pharmaceutical excipients and cosmetic ingredients.
“Sensient had an exceptional year in 2013, and we delivered strong results in the fourth quarter,” said Paul Manning. “The Color Group performed very well throughout the year, and I was encouraged by the Flavors & Fragrances Group’s performance in the fourth quarter. I am confident in our ability to grow both businesses and I am optimistic about 2014 and beyond.”
Sensient’s largest division is Flavors & Fragrances Group, which reported revenue of $881.3 million in 2013, up slightly from $875.3 million last year. Operating income was $122.4 million in 2013 and $123.0 million in 2012. The Flavors & Fragrances Group’s operating margins were 13.9% in 2013 and 14.1% in 2012.
The Color Group, including Sensient’s inkjet inks, reported revenue of $494.0 million in 2013, compared to $499.2 million in 2012. Operating income was up 7.5% to $103.6 million in 2013 from $96.4 million in 2012. The Color Group’s operating margin was 21.0% in 2013, a 170 basis point increase from the 19.3% reported in 2012.
Sensient’s Formulabs and SensiJet desktop inkjet ink sales remained strong, as the company supplies inks to the leading OEM desktop printers, as well as inks for wide format and textile markets, including its ElvaJet pigmented inks for polyester.
To meet the needs of sublimation printers, Sensient launched ElvaJet Alpha, a new water-based platform dedicated to sustainable textile printing. The first application for ElvaJet Alpha is direct-to-polyester printing, with demonstrated savings of up to 90% water and energy. ElvaJet Alpha inks can be applied directly onto virtually any polyester textile, being fixed only with dry heat, and there is no washing or other finishing step needed.
“The launch of ElvaJet Alpha has definitely been a major highlight in 2013,” Bulliard said. “It also marks further our strategy to develop and offer solutions that offers competitive advantages to end users in terms of efficiency, productivity and sustainability.”
Raw materials remain a concern. Bulliard reported that the raw material situation is “very concerning,” as colorants from China are under pressure.
“Chinese producers of colorants are under strong pressure to improve their operations in the respect of the environment, which is a positive way towards sustainability of the industry,” Bulliard said. “However, several of them have chosen to cease operations rather than investing, which is putting a lot of pressure on the price of raw materials.”
Bulliard said that with the addition of ElvaJet Alpha as well as new products for industrial printing, 2014 looks to be a good year for Sensient’s ink division.
“We expect 2014 to be strong,” Bulliard concluded. “We expect to launch new solutions for industrial printing.”
Comments: Sensient Technologies is a worldwide leader in inkjet and colorant technology, as well as the world’s leading supplier of flavors, fragrances and colors used to make a diverse variety of foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors.
In 2012, Sensient achieved record revenue of $1.5 billion, an increase of 5% over 2011, and operating income of $191.2 million, an increase of 3% from 2011.
The Flavors & Fragrances Group, its largest division, had sales of for $875.3 million in sales in 2012. The Colors Group achieved record sales of $494.1 million in 2012. Inkjet inks and colors account for 12% of Color Group sales, or $55 million.
“We achieved record revenues and earnings for a third consecutive year despite a very challenging environment,” said Kenneth Manning, chairman and CEO of Sensient Technologies. “We increased our dividend, repurchased shares and continued to reinvest in our business during 2012. We continue to see growth opportunities and I am very optimistic about the company’s future.”
In the digital inkjet market, Sensient’s Formulabs and SensiJet desktop inkjet ink sales remain strong, as the company supplies inks to the leading OEM desktop printers. The company also offers inks for wide format and textile markets, including its ElvaJet pigmented inks for polyester.
Sales and profits for inkjet inks in the Americas increased by more than 10% compared to 2011, with increased focus and market alignment and penetration within textiles, packaging and security digital inks. Scott Jacobson, general manager, Digital Ink Jet Inks, Americas, added there is increased transformation from conventional printing to digital inkjet wide format printing within the textile and packaging segments.
In a major personnel move, Paul Manning was elected to the position of president and chief operating officer, as well as to Sensient’s Board of Directors. Paul Manning joined Sensient in June 2009 as general manager, Food Colors, North America, and his responsibilities later expanded to include all of Latin America, as well as pharmaceutical, industrial and inkjet colors. He was elected president of the Color Group in July 2010. Under Paul Manning’s leadership, the Color Group achieved record operating profits during the time he served as president.
Michael Geraghty will succeed Paul Manning as president of the Color Group. Mr. Geraghty joined Sensient in April 2011 as general manager, Food Colors USA.
Sensient Technologies continues to expand its global color and flavor facilities. In early 2012, the company announced the opening of its new complex in JundiaĂ, Sao Paulo, Brazil. In October, Sensient announced that it plans to make a significant investment to build a new color and flavor complex in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Locations: Escondido and Carlsbad, CA; Tiajuana, Mexico; Badalona, Spain; Norfolk, UK, Morges, Switzerland; Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany.
Comments: A worldwide leader in inkjet and colorant technology, Sensient Technologies is the world’s leading supplier of flavors, fragrances and colors used to make a diverse variety of foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, home and personal care products, specialty printing and imaging products, computer imaging and industrial colors.
In 2010, Sensient achieved record revenue of $1.33 billion and record earnings of $107.1 million. The largest division, the Flavors & Fragrances Group, accounted for $809.1 million in sales in 2010, an increase of 4.7%. Inkjet inks and colors account for 12% of the Colors Group sales for Sensient, which increased 19.4% in 2010 to $447.5 million from $374.8 million in 2009.
In particular, Sensient’s Formulabs and SensiJet desktop inkjet ink sales are strong. The company has developed positions at the leading OEM desktop printers, and has formulated more than 150 ink sets for the market. The company also has developed inks for wide format and textile markets, including its ElvaJet pigmented inks for polyester.
In late 2011, Sensient Technologies announced that it is investing $22 million in its capabilities and production of textile and industrial inkjet inks at its facilities in Morges, Switzerland.
“With this investment, we are continuing to secure our leadership position not only in digital inks, but also in the global industrial ink market,” said Kenneth P. Manning, chairman, president and CEO of Sensient Technologies. “We see a significant opportunity to grow our digital inks business and to meet the long-term needs of our customers. Our investments ensure that we will remain in the forefront of the industry with cutting-edge technologies and state-of-the-art facilities.”
