I

began covering the ink industry in 1998, at a time when digital printing was just starting to become a viable idea. Throughout the years, the printing industry has evolved, driven by numerous factors, from the Internet leading to the decline of newspapers and many publications to the advent of new technologies such as conductive ink and, most notably, inkjet printing.

I first saw digital printing at drupa 2004, when I watched Xerox print books for attendees. By drupa 2008, digital printing was becoming mainstream. Today, inkjet holds major shares in some markets, with new applications coming on board regularly.

For my article, “The 2026 Inkjet Ink Market,” which starts on page 14, I am examining the direct-to-object printing segment, where inkjet is quickly gaining share. Direct-to-object printing is basically producing anything on a 3D shape; we see terrific examples on everything from craft beer cans to golf balls and so much more. Here, as always, the advantages of digital printing play a key role, whether it is personalization or short runs with just-in-time inventory. I’m looking forward to what the future holds…

… which brings me to the future, in another way. I have had the privilege and pleasure of serving as Ink World’s editor since 1998, and it is time for me to start stepping back. This will be my last issue as editor of Ink World, and I am happy to say that Kerry Pianoforte, the editor of Coatings World, will add Ink World to her portfolio. As for me, I’ll be helping out in a limited role through this year and perhaps further.

There are way too many people for me to thank for all of their guidance over the years. Briefly, I want to mention Dale Pritchett, our long-time publisher who hired me and introduced me to the industry, who retired as of Jan. 1, as well as my colleagues at Rodman Media. Most of all, I am thankful for the countless people throughout the ink industry, who have helped me, and in many cases, become good friends. As I said before, I’m looking forward to what the future holds!
