Comments: FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Business Innovation Division is a global leader in analog, hybrid, and digital printing and software, including presses, plates, printheads and inks, as well as screen and flexo inks. On the digital side, Fujifilm is launching new presses and inks for its Acuity, J Press and its new Revoria series.

FUJIFILM Ink Solutions Group provides high-performance UV, UV LED, aqueous and hybrid inkjet ink technologies, pigment dispersions and contract manufacturing services to print system OEMs, converters and ink formulators.

FUJIFILM Ink Solutions Group is seeing early growth in folding carton and flexible packaging in 2025, as development projects start to reach commercial production. There is also continued, steady growth in wide-format UV through Fujifilm’s own system business and OEM partners, as well as growing interest in US-based contract manufacturing, as companies look at options for localization of ink supply.

Fujifilm ink technology developments are focused in five key print sectors: Commercial, Packaging, Sign and Display, Textile, and Industrial. Fujifilm offers a network of dedicated development facilities and specialized manufacturing centers in the US, UK, and Japan. The New Castle, Delaware, USA site specializes in aqueous inkjet pigment dispersion and ink manufacturing and provides contract/toll manufacturing services.

The Inkjet Business Division (IJBD) represents Fujifilm’s inkjet technologies for external OEM sales, comprising dispersions, inks, printheads and integration products and services. In June this year, the headquarters of the IJBD was transferred from Tokyo to Fujifilm’s ink facility in the UK.

“This strengthens Fujifilm’s presence as a supplier of all inkjet components to OEMs globally and highlights the importance of ink chemistry in enabling new applications, such as water-based inks for packaging. Hiroaki Shimosaka – GM, Inkjet Business, and team members are now based in the UK,” said a spokesperson from FUJIFILM Ink Solutions Group.

An example of Fujifilm’s product development is its Aquafuze UV-curable aqueous inks for graphic display inkjet. Aquafuze is a new hybrid ink technology developed by Fujifilm, which combines the best of water-based and UV LED ink technologies. Benefits include low temperature, low energy curing and drying, and a thin, smooth ink film, with prints that are very flexible and durable. They can also be finished or laminated immediately after printing. Aquafuze is non-hazardous and low VOC, and recently earned honors from the European Digital Press (EDP) Association.

Fujifilm’s spokesperson sees many opportunities ahead in the graphic arts segment.

“As an ink supplier, we are quietly optimistic against a very uncertain backdrop, as we offer a very broad range of technologies and services, giving us multiple avenues for supply,” the spokesperson observed. “Our dispersion technology is particularly suited to the complex water-based ink formulations required for new high-speed packaging systems in development. Our ability to offer contract ink manufacture in the USA, for water-based inkjet inks, puts Fujifilm in a good position to provide support for companies looking right now to localize their ink supply.”

Fujifilm’s inkjet ink technologies global team is supported by a network of dedicated development facilities and specialized manufacturing centers in the USA, UK, and Japan.

Fujifilm ink technology developments are focused in five key print sectors: Commercial, Packaging, Sign and Display, Textile, and Industrial. The New Castle, DE, USA site specializes in aqueous inkjet pigment dispersion and ink manufacturing and provides contract/toll manufacturing services.

To meet its growth, Fujifilm commissioned the second phase of Fujifilm’s $45 million investment in a new pigment dispersion manufacturing plant at its Delaware site, and added David Burton as the chief commercial officer of the FUJIFILM Ink Solutions Group to increase focus on Fujifilm’s OEM ink and pigment dispersion business worldwide.

“We are generally seeing a mix of positive market conditions and inkjet pigment technology is showing robust growth,” said Fujifilm’s spokesperson. “Pigment textile and packaging are growing. Sign and Display and Industrial are progressing steadily. Pigment inkjet in Commercial Print is steady.

“At the ITMA 2023 textile exhibition in Milan, it was evident that pigment textile has arrived for digital printing, with most manufacturers showing digital pigment printing systems,” the spokesperson said. “Adoption from a low base is building momentum in textiles. At the show, Fujifilm presented its pigment dispersions for inkjet ink formulation. In packaging, the adoption of aqueous inkjet for filmic substrates is now a reality. It is still in its infancy, but it is happening now. Fujifilm launched its hybrid water-based UV technology into the wide format display space. Aquafuze combines the benefits of a smooth, low-film weight water-based inkjet print with the durability of UV.”

FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Communication Division fared pretty well in 2023. Digital printing continues to grow across all the printing segments, including labels and packaging. With the growing market of short run print job requests and sustainability being a hot topic, digital printing is more logical as it reduces waste across the board. Fujifilm continues to focus on adding the right digital print equipment to its product lines to match this trend.

“We continue to pay very close attention to what print service providers are experiencing and working to address their needs, not just sell them equipment,” a spokesperson said. “This also helps us focus on what changes and upgrades are required to equipment and software to keep up with the market.”

In particular, the launch of the new Revoria Press digital toner equipment in the US market last year was a highlight.

“We are receiving positive feedback on it from customers who had purchased it, especially with its unique and creative color configuration/setup (six color stations and 10 color options including pink, gold, silver, white and clear),” the Fujifilm spokesperson noted.

FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphics Systems Division serves as the primary distribution channel for these facilities across North America. FUJIFILM’s Kansas City team supports product development, technical engineering, color management, global purchasing and manufacturing.

“We specialize in UV, LED, solvent-based, and water-based inks and coatings in flexo, screen and digital markets,” said Scott Holub, VP of manufacturing for FUJIFILM Manufacturing U.S.A., Inc. “As a portion of the product portfolio matures in its life cycle, we are focused on bringing new products to market. LED curing products for flexo, screen, and industrial digital saw significant growth throughout the year.”

FUJIFILM’s ink operations faced a number of challenges in 2019. Ian Wilkinson, COO for FUJIFILM Ink Solutions Group in the UK, said that the biggest challenge of 2019 from an ink operations perspective was the management and recovery of the global supply issue of a key UV inkjet photoinitiator.

“Although all ink manufacturers suffered, Fujifilm proudly maintained supply of all our ink products to customers globally,” Wilkinson added. “But, to achieve this, multiple systems and processes were quickly adopted. We were in the fortunate position of being a leading, high volume manufacturer and therefore able to manage and move global stock and utilize buying power to keep our customers printing.”

Wilkinson noted that the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all businesses in one way or another, with the only common factor being the unpredictability from industry
to industry.

“We have seen medical and packaging inks increase dramatically while graphic ink systems have understandably suffered as events and retail industries are on hold,” Wilkinson added. “Our focus has been to balance manufacturing and our supply chains to ensure customers’ needs are met as demands fluctuate and ultimately recover.”

Holub reported that the manufacturing operation has remained open during these challenging times.

“Throughout this period, we have managed the continuously changing global supply chain and have adjusted our processes to ensure continuity for our customers,” he added. “Demand for screen and wide format digital inks declined with the onset of COVID-19, while flexo inks showed significant growth, particularly in the first two months.”

Jon Fultz, packaging product manager – Americas at FUJIFILM North America Corporation Graphic Systems Division, said that significant expansion of the UV/LED hybrid ink ranges were realized for both screen and flexo inks. Additions to the UV/LED portfolio in 2019 included a lightfast offering, many specialty coatings, adhesives and a full line of rotary screen inks.

“Product performance for many of the hybrid products was increased to meet or exceed traditional UV arc cured inks,” Fultz said. “2019 also included more than $1 million in capital equipment to improve product quality, data collection and safety systems by installing new pigment dispersion mills.

Wilkinson is relatively optimistic about the rest of 2020.

“As for the rest of 2020, we don’t expect full recovery to pre-COVID-19 norms, nor do we expect that this hiatus of print production will be replaced by a future ‘bounce’ in the economic environment,” Wilkinson observed. “But that’s OK and we are prepared for that. As Fujifilm, our objectives and actions are always measured and targeted at the long-term and ongoing service for our customers. These interim conditions won’t deter us from continuing to invest in
the future.”

FFIC also offers contract/toll manufacturing of aqueous inkjet inks.

Number of Employees: 1,250 (Ink World estimate).

Comments: A global leader in the field of digital printing presses, printheads and inks, FUJIFILM also has a strong position in screen and flexo inks. On the press side, FUJIFILM presses include the Acuity, J Press and Graphium systems, as well as working closely with Inca Digital on its OnsetX line of printers.

FUJIFILM has two divisions that manufacture inks: FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphics Systems Division and FUJIFILM Imaging Colorants (FFIC). The company has five ink factories globally.

Larry Hettinger, product manager, Graphic & Industrial Screen Inks, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphics Systems Division, said that FUJIFILM did well in all of its segments in 2018.

“Fujifilm’s sales of ink into a diverse range of market segments remain strong with manufacturing volumes growing year on year,” Hettinger noted. “The majority of this growth is due to higher sales of inkjet inks in the sign and display segment, and is driven in part by being faster than ever, with printhead and ink development driving faster output and higher quality. Fujifilm is leading the transition in inkjet printing technology through innovations in printheads and inkjet inks, and by bringing inkjet solutions to customers previously served through our heritage business in the screen and offset printing markets. Although we are proud to provide a wide variety of analog and digital print solutions to the commercial, newspaper and sign & display segments, we expect the majority of our incremental growth to come from the Packaging and Industrial print sectors over the next few years. Fujifilm believes the analog markets are at the tipping point where LED will begin to replace a significant amount of traditional UV arc and water-based printing.”

In June 2019, FUJIFILM and Inca Digital launched the new OnsetX HS (High Speed) range of UV flatbed printers. For this printer, Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems in the UK introduced Uvijet OX, a new Fujifilm inkjet range, including a brand new, patented ink technology. Available as a six-color CMYK Lc Lm set, Uvijet OX offers exceptional adhesion on rigid plastic media, the company noted.

“The launch of the new Uvijet OX ink set marks what we at Fujifilm believe to be a milestone in ink development for the inkjet industry – a high-performance specialist ink with the strongest adhesion to the widest range of challenging rigid plastic substrates,” said David Burton, commercial director, Fujifilm Specialty Ink Systems in announcing the launch. “Fujifilm has worked closely with the team at Inca Digital throughout the ink development process. Our challenge was to develop a completely new UV ink technology that would dramatically increase adhesion to a range of rigid substrates, but critically, without compromising on the robustness, reliability and quality the Onset X printing platforms are known for.

“The print industry continues to evolve at pace and our challenge at Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems is to continue to play a key role in defining where the industry is going and help printing companies to diversify and expand their offering to meet all the challenges and opportunities the market presents,” Burton added.

Comments: FUJIFILM manufactures a wide range of printing products, including state-of-the-art inkjet presses, including Acuity, J Press and Graphium presses, Samba printheads, workflow solutions and inks for inkjet, screen and UV flexo.

Fujifilm has two divisions that manufacture inks: FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphics Systems Division and FUJIFILM Imaging Colorants (FFIC). Larry Hettinger, product manager, graphic & industrial screen inks, wide format digital inks, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division, said that 2017 was another very strong year for Fujifilm’s ink business, with continued strong demand for both aqueous and UV digital inks.

“Our analog flexo and screen printing products showed particularly strong growth with our entry into LED curables,” Hettinger added. “2018 is off to a strong start as well.”

Hettinger said that the introduction of Fujifilm’s 300 series LED UV hybrid inks was an important addition to its portfolio.

“In addition to offering the flexibility of curing with either conventional UV-arc or LED, we designed this product in alignment with our new Illumina ColdCure LED retrofit system, delivering a powerful combination of increased on-press performance and significantly lower operating costs,” Hettinger added. “With the latest innovations in LED systems and inks, the retrofit market for screen and flexo inks is proving to be a very high growth market on a global basis. There is a lot of interest in functional printing for digital + screen ink constructions. The corrugated packaging and folding carton markets continue to grow with the changing climate of consumer purchasing methods.

“From a sustainability standpoint, the long-awaited transition to LED is a very strong positive,” he said. “Reducing energy costs to run a press up to 93%, and eliminating VOCs and mercury from the environment, LED is an extremely sustainable solution.”

Hettinger noted that raw material pricing and availability remain a significant concern for the ink industry.

“Like our peers, we constantly monitor raw material market trends and customer demand to balance optimized inventory levels and adequate supply chain quantities,” he observed. “The recent issues with titanium dioxide supplies combined with a reduction in Chinese sources for key UV ink components is unprecedented, but we are working diligently to meet our customers’ demands.

The outlook for demand remains strong, but our enthusiasm on the supply side is tempered by the raw material availability and pricing facing all of us in this market.”

Brent Moncrief, VP marketing and brand management, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division, reported that 2016 was another strong year for FUJIFILM, across all of its platforms.

“FUJIFILM had a solid year in both our graphics and ink business segments, from both a ‘traditional’ (analog) and digital print solutions perspective,” Moncrief noted.

“As we continue to introduce inkjet imaging technology into new market segments, we are proud of the market response to our integrated hardware, individual components, software and best in class inks,” he added. “This wide portfolio enable us to engage with printers and convertors spanning several market segments, including commercial, sign and display, label and packaging and industrial.”

Moncrief said that FUJIFILM is looking into new opportunities. “We are constantly evaluating our investments in market segments and geographies, and adjusting them as we forecast new growth opportunities,” he said.

Moncrief said that FUJIFILM is working with its customers on meeting regulatory issues.

Regulatory oversight is a necessary and valuable role, and one which we fully support,” said Moncrief said. “The challenge, of course, is that different organizations bring different perspectives and guidelines, which must be followed, and the administrative burden of compliance can be daunting.”

Because of its portfolio of digital and conventional inks, FUJIFILM has strong expectations for 2017.

“While there are clearly some segments we serve which are mature and even declining, we believe our focus on diversifying both our traditional and digital inks and coatings has us well positioned for success in 2017 and beyond,” Moncrief concluded.

Terry Mitchell, director of marketing communications, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division, noted that Fujifilm’s inkjet business experienced significant growth in 2015, fueled by the introduction of new wide format equipment models.

“Commercial printers adopting these new technologies, and diversifying into new markets are experiencing growth,” Mitchell added. “The packaging segment, including tag and label, folding carton, and corrugated applications are also growing at a fast pace. Wide format also continues to grow as newer models increase production capabilities and expand print applications.”

In particular, Mitchell is seeing strong growth in UV inkjet ink in wide format printing.

“In the wide format market, UV-based inkjet inks are replacing older solvent systems due to many advantages including elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), faster drying, improved finishing and lower cost,” Mitchell said. “Lower odor UV inks and low migration UV inks are also paving the path for growth in packaging markets for food applications, and improved performance of aqueous inks on a wide range of substrates, due in some cases to the use of pre-coat primers, is driving growth for general commercial and packaging applications.”

During the past year, Fujifilm introduced Uvijet KV inks for thermoforming applications, and Uvijet low odor OL inks for corrugated applications. New Uvijet inks providing a broader adhesion profile and new orange ink to expand color gamut were also introduced in the wide format market.

Myers noted that FFIC had success with its RxD Aqueous pigment dispersion technology.

“The dispersion range available in CMYK, Red & Blue is used in Fujifilm inks and offered as an intermediate to third party ink formulators,” Myers said. “Markets adopting the technology are textiles, commercial paper print, direct mail, packaging and flooring.”

Mitchell sees further growth ahead for digital printing.

“Digital printing will continue to grow in both the near and long term as print buyer demand for versioned, variable and short run work increases,” Mitchell said. “Increasing digital inkjet print speeds and improved print quality at these higher speeds will transition more work from traditional print methods to digital inkjet printing, and as previously mentioned, the packaging market, including tag and label, folding carton and corrugated applications will adopt digital print technologies and continue to grow at a fast pace.”

“There is clearly an evolution occurring in the printing industry, with inkjet doing particularly well,” Ewing concluded. “In the aqueous inkjet market, we see two major trends: continued strong growth in the office, commercial print, textile and other industrial inkjet markets; and declining demand in the consumer space. With all the technologies we have within Fujifilm, there is no shortage of opportunity: the challenge is in selecting the best growth opportunities and then delivering on these.”

Comments: FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Graphic Systems Division is a global leader in digital and screen inks, and the company continued to experience growth in the digital side of its business in 2012.

“Inkjet grew at double digits, offsetting a decline in graphic screen inks. Demand for industrial screen inks and narrow web flexo inks remained robust, particularly in Eastern Europe,”commented Peter Kenehan, managing director, Fujifilm Specialty Ink Systems Ltd., Broadstairs, UK.

The shift from analog to digital continued in the graphic display market, and some industrial segments were down year over year. This was particularly evident in optical media disk decoration, where digital downloads are becoming more prevalent.

“Fujifilm’s North America graphic and industrial screen inksexperienceda decline in 2012, primarily due to the shift to digital inkjet for graphics and the shift in technology from disks to downloads for optical media,” said Larry Hettinger, product marketing manager for graphic and industrial screen inks.

Fujifilm also recorded growth in narrow web in North America, seeing increases in water-based and UV flexo inks for packaging.

“The packaging industry is healthy and growing in both analog and digital technologies. In particular, flexography is growing due to increased quality capabilities and economic benefits of short run and fast turnaround times compared to gravure and offset,” said John Fultz, business development manager – packaging, Fujifilm North America Corporation.

The commercial offset market paints a different picture with offset ink volumes declining, which Fujifilm attributes to the migration of and improvements in digitaltechnologies and market demands for shorter print run lengths. There is also some price erosion in the commercial print segment due to market pressures to reduce cost.

European markets showed some improvement, despite a depressed economy across Europe. Emerging markets such as Turkey, Middle East and Russia are leap-frogging analog and investing directly into digital technology.

“While there has been some improvement in Northern Europe, access to capital remains difficult,” Mr. Kenehan said. “This condition results in a lower rate of investment in new technologies.”

As Fujifilm grows, the company continues to upgrade and expand its operations. In 2012, the company completed the refurbishment of its R&D facilities in the UK and commissioned its new UK inkjet manufacturing plant, which adds capacity for the company’s growing inkjet business. Fujifilm also added improvements to its inkjet ink manufacturing capabilities at its facility in Kansas City.

In addition, a fully automated ink manufacturing cell for water-based flexo inks was installed in Kansas City. The state-of-the-art cell allows for highly accurate and quick turn-around batches while minimizing costs.

Personnel additions in the packaging segment included adding dedicated regional and national sales resources in addition to more resources for business development. There are several new product introductions planned for the packaging segment in 2013, including inkjet equipment, inkjet inks and new flexo plates.

In the screen graphics market segment, Fujifilm will be launching new products to help customers reduce costs and increase productivity. Efforts are centered on launching new inks that will improve print performance on the wide array of various media available today.

Fujifilm’s wide format inkjet business is growing, and many of the new products – both equipment and ink – are being launched in the wide format and production inkjet product areas. With new equipment comes to new inks, and Fujifilm launched several new inkjet inks for its wide format UV equipment. More flexible and high adhesion Uvijet inks were introduced, and new Vividia inks were also launched for the J Press series. Fujifilm has launched four new digital inks in the past year, each designed to optimize the performance of a market-leading Fujifilm printer platform.

A new brighter yellow also enhances print vibrancy and color gamut. The new ink series offers a choice of either blue shade or yellow shade magenta, each with a matching light color.

Uvijet LL series, a fast curing UV-LED ink, was launched with the new Fujifilm Acuity 1600 LED printer. Benefits include excellent adhesion, elongation and abrasion properties. Offered as an 8 color set, Uvijet LL includes CMYK, light cyan, light magenta, white and clear. The inks are provided in a reusable cartridge and replaceable ink pouch system for added convenience and reduced waste.

Uvijet KA is a new alternative UV curable ink for the Fujifilm Acuity Advance series printers. Designed to meet the demands of the UV flatbed print market, Uvijet KA sets a new standard for adhesion to rigid plastic substrates. Uvijet KA is a CMYK plus white ink set and can also be used with the Uvijet KN clear on Acuity Select models.

At drupa 2012, Fujifilm introduced a digital inkjet web press as a technology showcase. The press uses Fujifilm’s new high performance Vividia ink, developed specifically to facilitate superb image quality.

Vividia ink allows high-density images to be printed at high speed, with less ink transfer from sheet to sheet, with high quality reproduction possible even on thin paper. A variety of ink types, including both pigment and dye-based inks, have been developed for use with this press.

Fujifilm also offers its Color+ aftermarket inkjet inks, which are designed to provide optimal performance on a wide variety of inkjet printers from many of the leading suppliers. Color+ utilizes Fujifilm’s proprietary MicroV fine pigment dispersion technology, which greatly reduces printhead clogging while offering stronger, brighter colors.

Fujifilm’s primary highlight in narrow web packaging was entry into the water-based flexo ink market with the 700 range of products. Technology advances in on-press stability and very broad adhesion range are key differentiators in this new ink range.
